Peculiarities of work of thermal imagers in conditions of observation of sources of radiation with the small angular sizes are analyzed. By consideration is applied the method of decomposition of radiation into spatial - spectral modes. Such approach allows by a naturally to take into account diffractional and aberrational effects of used optics. Relations received in work for a radiative noise equivalent temperature and contrast allow to estimate these parameters for emitters with the small angular sizes through meanings determined for the extended radiating emitters.
